Quilt works 2013- 2014
I decided one day when painting started, more and more, to look like quilts, to take action. I'd dig into that bucket list and, for once and for all, learn how to make quilts. I started by doing small appliques referencing phone book series of little women which I had sold to a gallery in 2009. I then "framed them" by using quilt stitching over them as well as the appropriate binding around the edges. These were in essence, small quilts that provided me with the basic knowledge needed to make a regular quilt. I then signed up for a class and made my first quilt. It was a real thrill to have accomplished this, but after the quilt projects I quickly returned to painting. The quilting was a way of being closer to my past and part of my mother's legacy. Though she did not quilt, I remember dresses and some embroidery. I especially remember the thrill of witnessing an image of an appliqued kite on one particular dress.
