I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1945. I lived there until age 21 when I moved to Manhattan to complete an Elementary Education degree. Around the time of graduation I got interested in art. When taking the last few course requirements related to teaching children art, I came to realize that I was going to be an artist and paint for the rest of my life. As a late bloomer, I quickly accumulated about 34 art credits in various colleges. I spent much time in the library, attending workshops, and visiting museums. I worked hard to overcome the lack of exposure to the arts in my childhood. Though my mother was very expressive and appeared to have hidden talent, she was a very practical person who was concerned about financial stability. Likewise, my father, while he entertained creative projects in his electronics business, he too took the more practical outlook. My mother would always say of me, “You’ll just go and do what you want!” Having spent the last 30 plus years developing a talent in painting; largely putting together my own program, I’d say she was right. Upon returning to New Orleans in 1976, while still balancing teaching with painting, I worked outdoors as a Jackson Square artist. At first I created impressionistic watercolors of parades, jazz musicians, and local flavor. I then moved on to portrait painting in pastel and charcoal. I occasionally got commissions to paint private homes and many portraits. I learned about color from a visiting artist and wonderful painter, Henry Hensche.
After moving to Colorado in 1981, I worked at a private high school where I taught Henry’s approach. After just one year, my husband and I moved to Madison, Wisconsin where I worked with adults, part-time, at Madison Area Technical College. I was able to once again utilize my education courses, not for elementary students but for adult basic education students. The students I worked with were a good match for me, but I was able to keep my painting separate. I did, however, conduct several painting workshops in my home studio as well as at art centers such as Peninsula Art School in Door County and The Wisconsin Center for Paper Arts in Madison, Wisconsin.
Over the years, I continued taking art workshops, learning from exposure to other artists, and attending large art shows in Chicago and Miami. In this fashion, I was able to refine my style to where it is today.
After 22 years at MATC,in 2006, I retired at the age of 61. Within 3 years, I relocated to Anna Maria Island in July 2009 till November 2012. I decided to leave the ice and snow behind. While waiting for husband to retire in Madison, for the next two years, I painted all day, every day on 15 large canvasses. I entered a show at Long Boat Key Art Center and won first place with one of them. We are now happily living in Sarasota with more space and closer proximity to a larger city. Fortunately, I still have a beautiful view from my new home studio and gallery. Also, we seasonally rent a room through Airbnb. I continue to be charmed and inspired by Florida's fauna and flora.
